Crossroads Tour: Calgary

Crossroads Tour: Calgary Dates / Times 2019-05-18 to 2019-05-18 (19:00 to 21:00) Organization Canadian Bandurist Capella Type Single Day Community Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall, Rozsa Centre, 206 University Ct NWCalgary, ABT2N 4V8 416.845.2691 Ukrainian Canadians have a story to tell. Like storytelling minstrels of old, the Canadian Bandurist Capella lets its voices and the strings of the bandura bring the rich musical story of Ukrainian Canadians to life. "Crossroads," conceived and arranged by the Capella's new artistic director Julian Kytasty, is a story of journeys, a story of roads that brought us here, roads leading into the future and connecting to the past, of crossroads that form the lattice of a culture spanning centuries and continents. These are songs of joys and hardships, of armies on the march and immigrants on the move, musical treasures brought to Canada by great musicians of past generations and new work by young bandurists seeking new paths for their instrument. The Capella will be joined on "Crossroads" by Guest Artist Maria Cherwick, one of Canada's finest young violinists. Based in St. John's, Newfoundland, where she plays with the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, Maria is well-versed in many traditional fiddling styles (Ukrainian, Cape Breton, Newfoundland, and Old-Time Canadian) and performs with the folk band "The Kubasonics". The Canadian Bandurist Capella (CBC) is one of the premier bandura ensembles in North America. Established in 2001 as the Toronto Bandurist Capella, the ensemble later changed its name to the Canadian Bandurist Capella in 2004. The CBC showcases powerful male voices combined with the rich sound of the bandura, the national instrument of Ukraine. As a not-for-profit corporation, the Capella is continually working to promote and popularize the bandura within the Ukrainian-Canadian community and beyond. The CBC is committed to advancing and exploring new possibilities for choral-bandura music while honoring the instrument's deep history. Through powerful and dynamic musical arrangements and performances, the Capella delivers a unique listening experience to diverse audiences.-Tickets available online at http://arts-tickets.ucalgary.ca/events and over the phone at 403-210-7576 .
