Earth Hour 2013

Earth Hour in Calgary Location: Bridgeland Riverside Community Centre 917 Centre Ave NE When: Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 8:00-10:00pm Contact: Judi Vandenbrink Email: info@ecolivingevents.ca WebSite: www.ecolivingevents.ca On March 23 at 8:30 pm, hundreds of millions of people around the world will turn off their lights for an hour to demand action on climate change. It is not merely one hour without lights, but a symbolic gesture to shed light on the fact that reducing climate change is possible through every small action we take. Calgarians are invited to join this global initiative by turning out their lights, and attending "Earth Hour in Calgary" at the Bridgeland/ Riverside Community Centre 917 Centre Avenue NE from 8:00pm to 10:00pm. Hot chocolate and coffee (heated by solar power) will be available for participants who bring their own mug. We will have a large drumming circle and are encouraging Calgarians to bring their drums (and other instruments) although several instruments will be available on location. Earth Hour Participants will be given a free solar light which will be used to illuminate the word "Calgary" in the field next to the community centre. Earth Hour will begin with a countdown prior to 8:30pm. At 8:30 sharp, several buildings in the city's downtown skyline will shut out their lights and the solar "Calgary" will be revealed. During Earth Hour we will talk about Calgary's environmental challenges and will ask our audience to share their ideas about reducing climate change. We will operate our sound system by bicycle power. EcoLiving Events is a volunteer based, non-profit organization that aims to "facilitate information exchange and partnerships among communities about innovative, environmentally sustainable options." Founded in 2002 to fill a noticeably absent gap in the Calgary environmental scene, the foundation has grown to reach over 55,000 people, while promoting a vision of "people living in a healthy and sustainable environment."
