The concert features the music of Arturo Márquez of Mexico; Julián Orbón of Cuba; Heitor Villa-Lobos of Brazil; and Astor Piazzolla and Alberto Ginastera of Argentina. In bringing the heat of this music to the Jack Singer, the Civic is joined by guest artists the U of C String Quartet, soprano Michelle Minke and accordionist Penny Sanborn. As part of our special warm up the winter event, the musicians will be joined by tango dancers and teachers Leo Sato and Marina Gonzalez of Tango Calgary (www.tangocalgary.com) A special pre-concert treat at 1:45 pm will feature students from Tango Calgary and members of the audience may be given the opportunity to achieve their secret desire to learn to tango! The Calgary Civic Symphony was founded in 1975 as Calgary's volunteer orchestra. Over the years, the Civic has swelled to over 80 musicians. With an interesting diversity in professions, its members come together each week to rehearse complex orchestral works. Under the baton of Artistic Director and Conductor Rolf Bertsch, the Symphony shapes and polishes performances that are truly brilliant! In fact, the Civic is often confused with Calgary's other—but professional—orchestra. . Event Details. Location: Jack Singer Concert Hall, 205 8th Avenue SE, Calgary
