Wednesday, 19 March 2025 - Did you know museums have been active agents in the colonization of Indigenous Peoples throughout history? Early museums displayed stolen items and appropriated the cultures of oppressed groups to reinforce the power of colonialism. Even today, many museums still follow the practices set by early colonial institutions. Many museums are starting to “decolonize” themselves, but this is not an easy task. In this edition of Hot Dogs & Hot Takes, museum experts Alexandra Hatcher and Crystal Willie will discuss what exactly the responsibilities of modern museums are. To Alexandra and Crystal, decolonization is not a buzzword, and museums are perfect places to hold conversations about Truth and Reconciliation. By putting a critical eye on how these institutions upheld oppressive systems, our speakers will provide insight on how museums can work towards dismantling outdated and harmful colonial practices. -
