Astrochemistry - Origins of Life

Astrochemistry: A search for the Origins of Life in the Universe Location: Rothney Astrophysical Observatory When: Saturday, September 22, 2012 at 8:00 PM - 11:00 PM Contact: Jennifer Howse Email: rao@phas.ucalgary.ca WebSite: www.ucalgary.ca/rao Modern astronomy involves more than most people realize. While the use of physics to understand the origins of galaxies, stars and planets is still fundamental, astronomers have begun to realize that chemistry and even biology play important roles in understanding the universe. The dynamical and physical evolution of a nebulous cloud of interstellar gas on its way to becoming a star and planetary system is also accompanied by an evolution of chemical species which play an important role in regulating this process. In addition, the recent detection of complex molecules in the interstellar medium points to the possibility that the chemicals important to life, and even life itself, might have originated deep in interstellar space. Dr. Plume will talk about the research of the Institute for Space Imaging Science and his work at radio telescopes around the world. The sky will offer a great opportunity to observe Cygnus the Swan which will be flying high and directly over our heads. We'll have our telescopes operating and astronomerson hand to answer questions. We will kick off the evening with a presentation on what's up the sky.Entrance fee: $20 per car OR $10 per personwww.ucalgary.ca/rao. Event Details. Location: Rothney Astrophysical Observatory
