Charpentier and the French Baroque

Charpentier and the French Baroque Location: Knox United Church (506 – 4th Street SW, Calgary) When: Saturday, March 17, 2012 at 8:00 PM Email: tkts1@spirituschamberchoir.ca WebSite: www.spirituschamberchoir.ca/ Join Spiritus Chamber Choir on a journey to 17th-century France, to hear some of the greatest music of the time. Calgary audiences will be thrilled by the beauty and grace of Charpentier's Mass for 8 voices, violins & flutes – one of the composer's most impressive and lavish works. The dramatic string playing will be handled by some of Alberta's finest baroque musicians and guests from across the country. Marc-Antoine Charpentier, born the year of Monteverdi's death, lived in the shadow of his great contemporary Jean-Baptiste Lully. However, Charpentier's music was written with both an elegance and dramatic joie-de-vivre that is characteristic of French music to this day. Since its founding in 1995, Spiritus Chamber Choir has enriched the Calgary and Canadian choral scene with performances of high-quality choral repertoire. Known for diverse programming, Spiritus Chamber Choir has championed music both old and new from around the world, and integrated various performing and visual arts within its performance.
