Atheist Sobriety - Dr. Ross Mutton

CFI Presents Dr. Ross Mutton on Atheist Sobriety Location: MSC Escalus Room, Macewan Hall, University of Calgary When: Saturday, December 17, 2011 at 3:30-5:30 Contact: Gord Cummings Contact Number: 403-815-9508 Email: gordwcummings@gmail.com WebSite: rossmutton/eventbrite.com With the Christmas season upon us we should recognize whether you're atheist or not, it is a season of struggle for many people. In the effort to provide cheer and smiles for our loved ones, there are many who find this effort foreboding to the point that they are pushed to their vices. Triggers abound for those who suffer addictions of many sorts, whether that be gambling, alcohol, or illegal substances. Dr. Ross Mutton leads a local chapter of SOS, which stands for Secularist Organizations for Sobriety. SOS is an anonymous model of support group for those who are uncomfortable with the spiritual underpinnings of 12 step programs. SOS recognizes the personal power in the addiction recovery process rather than a higher power. In this, Dr. Mutton encourages a true humanist approach to some of life's most challenging trials. Dr. Ross Mutton is a close friend of the Calgary Centre For Inquiry as well as a close friend of the community in general. Before his retirement Dr. Mutton taught for 15 years at both Forest Lawn High School and at the Calgary Correctional Centre. Dr. Mutton also led anger management groups for AADAC (now Alberta Health Services). He has also facilitated the Self Management and Recovery Training (SMART) and led Rational Recovery groups in Calgary. Join Dr. Ross Mutton in a fascinating look at how the separation of addiction from spirituality can lead to a successful recovery. Friends of Calgary Centre For Inquiry and members of the UoC Freethinkers group recieve free admission. Proof of membership is required at entry.. Event Details.
