Titanic: The Musical - University of Calgary Operetta Company

The University of Calgary Operetta Company presents Titanic: The Musical from January 13 – 15 and January 19 – 21, 2011 at the University Theatre on the University of Calgary campus. Titanic: The Musical retells the infamous story of the RMS Titanic which sank on its maiden voyage to New York City on April 14, 1912. With music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and book by Peter Stone “Titanic: The Musical” opened on Broadway in 1997 and was the winner of five Tony Awards in 1997, including the award for Best Musical. The UofC Operetta Company, now in its fourth year of operation, specializes in producing Broadway standards in a manner befitting the scope and scale of some of the medium’s best-loved works, while remaining mindful of the limitations imposed on non-professional performance groups employing a company of widely-diverging experience and skill sets.. Titanic: The Musical brings comedy, pathos and poignancy to life in a riveting historical drama tunefully underscored by one of Broadway’s most compelling composers. “We’re very proud to be bringing yet another Broadway standard to the University of Calgary in such a unique and communal setting.” says Dr. Colleen Whidden, artistic director for the UofC Operetta Company. “After landing a helicopter onstage last year in Miss Saigon, this seemed the natural follow-up in terms of spectacle – as well as in terms of emotional cachet.
